Influenza (also called the flu) is a potentially serious viral infection that affects millions of Americans every fall and winter. Most people who get the flu describe it as the worst cold of their lives. Symptoms usually develop quickly and include total body aches, fever, runny nose, sore throat and cough. Many infected people are too sick to even get out of bed.
When people talk about getting “the flu,” they often make the mistake of thinking that a common cold is actually an influenza infection. The “real” flu is a serious disease. Besides likely making you miserable for two weeks, it puts about 130,000 people a year in the hospital and causes about 20,000 deaths.
The best way to avoid getting the flu is to get the flu shot, avoid people who are sick with the flu and begin treatment quickly if you have someone in your home get sick with the flu.
A common myth is that you can get sick from the flu shot. This is not true! The material in the shot is not living. If you get sick after a flu shot it is because you have another infection or, possibly that the vaccine was not successful and you came in contact with someone sick with the flu. Even if you develop the flu later on, you will have a milder version due to having had the vaccine.
You can get a flu shot, testing for the flu infection and flu treatment at any Rocky Mountain Urgent Care location. Talk to your doctor. There are very few exceptions that disqualify you from getting the shot. Treatment for the actual illness must be started quickly after symptoms begin. Let us know if we can help.
